The story background discusses how a future, ruined Chicago becomes a society that defines its citizens by strict conformity to their social and personality-related affiliations with five different factions. This removes the threat of anyone exercising independent will and re-threatening the population's safety through war or another human-created catastrophe.

The factions are Abnegation to uphold selflessness, Amity to uphold peacefulness, Candor to uphold honesty, Dauntless to uphold bravery, and Erudite, to uphold knowledge.

Tris tests out for equal aptitude with three different factions: Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless. This classifies her as "Divergent" and capable of independent thought beyond the restrictive nature of the factions. She is warned never to share this information with anyone for fear of her life. Divergent are a threat to the stable society, hunted and killed by the ruthless leader of Erudite, Jeanine , in order to eliminate the "threat" of independent thinking.

Those who fail the initiation of their particular faction are deemed factionless, who are treated as a lower class and a drain on society. Tris learns from Tobias "Four" Eaton about the rebel "Allegiant" working to restore the faction system. Several people are killed in a confrontation between faction members and the factionless, including Evelyn's right-hand man, Edward. Tris is invited to a meeting with the Allegiant, whose leaders, Cara and Johanna Reyes , plan to usurp Evelyn and send envoys outside the city.

Tris asks Tobias to free her brother Caleb from execution. Tori is killed by the factionless, while the others escape and meet Tobias' mentor, Amar , long presumed dead. They are taken to the Bureau of Genetic Welfare and its leader, David.

David explains that Chicago is walled off from the outside world in an experiment sanctioned by the US Government to produce more genetically pure GP "Divergents" from the genetically damaged GD population, the result of a failed attempt to correct human genes that led to the "Purity War". David gives Tris her mother Natalie 's journal detailing her life before Chicago: Tris is skeptical of the plan, albeit jealous of Nita.

Tris stops Nita's rampage by holding David hostage before wounding and arresting her. Tris is appointed a council member, and realizes that the Bureau supplied Erudite with the simulation serums that controlled Dauntless in the invasion of Abnegation. Security footage reveals that Marcus Eaton , banished by Evelyn, is working with Johanna to steal the factionless' weapons, which Evelyn will counter by releasing the death serum.

Tris learns that David intends to release serums capable of erasing memories on the population to save his experiment. She formulates a plan to release the memory serum on the Bureau while Tobias, Christina, and Peter, with Amar and George's help, return to Chicago with antiserums for Christina and Uriah's families. Tobias, with his own plan to inject his mother with a memory serum, confronts her, asking her to avert the war in exchange for becoming his mother again.

Evelyn agrees, and negotiates peace with Johanna and Marcus, exiling herself for two years while Marcus vows never to lead Chicago. Tobias gives the memory serum to Peter, who intends to start anew. Caleb volunteers to expose the memory serum, a suicide mission, but Tris replaces him. She successfully repels the death serum, but is shot by David.

Dying, Tris sees visions of her mother embracing her, before succumbing to her wounds. In a deep depression, Tobias is about to drink the memory serum to erase his memories of Tris until Christina stops him.

Uriah's brother, Ezekiel "Zeke" , and his mother, Hana , are with Uriah as his life support is unplugged. Two and a half years later, Chicago is reopened and rebuilding, where people coexist regardless of gene purity. Tobias, now an assistant council member under Johanna, welcomes Evelyn back from her exile. Exploring him and his choices and his assumptions about the world was incredibly interesting to me. Veronica Roth said that she didn't try to choose titles ending with "-ent" for all three books.

Source Language TL: Translation by Paraphrase TBO: Translation process scheme By Larson Achmad Basari Keywords: The objective of this study is to know the dominant translation strategy applied by the translator in translating pure idioms.

This thesis was a qualitative data research. The data were collected through two steps, the first step was to search the data in the bookstore, and the second step was to decide the Divergent novel as the data of this study. In analyzing the data, the researcher read the bilingual novel and found the classified data to be analyzed. There are 38 pure idioms which were then analyzed and classified according to the translation strategies composed by Mona Baker.

The result shows that there are 3 translation strategies applied by the translator in order to solve the idiom. The 3rd translation strategy is translation by omission. In conclusion, it can be said that the dominant translation strategy applied by the translator is the translation by paraphrase. Since English is an International language, many of mass media in the form of printed, broadcast, and web based mass media are presented in English language. Therefore the audience of those mass media should master or at least have a good comprehension of English language.

However, there are many people who do not master English language well. To make a bridge for the gap, the translator job is playing an important role in the information exchange.

According Cartford Besides, Nida and Taber Both definitions above imply that the translator job is to transfer the information into the TL as closely as possible from its SL intended information, and then followed with how the style of writing in the SL is well transferred to TL.

In the process of translation there are units that cause a problem of transferring to its full meaning in the TL. One of the units is idioms; this unit has been an interesting issue in translation. According to Hornby ; , an idiom is a phrase or sentence whose meaning is not clear from the meaning of its individual words and which must be learnt as a whole unit, for instance, the idiom spill the beans means to reveal secret information, especially without intending to do so.

C Carter. According to Carter ; 65 idioms are a special combinations with restricted forms and meanings that cannot be deduced from the literal meanings of the words which make them up. Accordingly, an idiom is learned and used as a single unit. It should not be analyzed into its constituents; it is unchangeable and always carries figurative meaning.

Both definitions above indicate that an idiom cannot be translated literally. Therefore, a special treatment should be applied in the process of translating Idioms. Idioms or idiomatic expressions are often used in both formal or casual situation and written or verbal communication. Idioms are colorful and fascinating unit of a language use; it shows the style in how a message is delivered. In matter of style, there are various ways and options to deliver a message.

There is also various form of idioms, the Linguistic expert has classified them into idioms classification. Fernando This study aims to observe the first classification of idioms, the pure idioms. According to Fernando Unlike Pure idioms, Semi idioms have one unit constituent from the phrase composition which has literal meaning. As for Literal idioms, it is an idiom that consists of more than one unit which has literal meaning in its phrase composition.

The non literal meaning of Pure idioms cause a problem to the translation process. The translator requires a good linguistic knowledge on both SL and TL in order to transfer its whole idea. The failure of translating pure idioms to the TL might cause misleading information to the reader. To overcome the failure, an appropriate translation strategy must be considered to translate the idioms. According to Baker The subject of analysis for this study is a novel entitled Divergent.

It is a bestseller fiction novel published in the year of This novel is translated into Bahasa Indonesia language by Mizan Book publisher in the year of with the same title Divergent. This research observed the first book of the Divergent trilogy.

This book has been sold over 6, 7 million copies in In addition, Divergent was also adapted into a movie by Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment with the same title Divergent in the year of By the production of the Film, the Divergent novel becomes more popular. It can be said that Divergent is well-known and its novel has been read by many people. The story of this Novel is about the post-apocalyptic versions of Chicago and its society life.

The story is all about the five factions that were formed by the ancestor of the city before the apocalyptic war. It is believed that the factions were created to keep the live of human from extinction.

The name and value in which the five factions keep are Abnegation, for the value of selflessness; Amity, for the value of peace; Candor, for the value of honesty; Dauntless, for the value of bravery; and Erudite, for the value of intellectual. This novel is worth taking as the data for this study because of its bestseller and controversial issue in Christianity. The idea of Post apocalyptic life written by Veronica Roth has a different point of view to Christianity, though Veronica herself is a Christian.

However, some of Christian communities accept the concept of post apocalyptic life presented in the novel as a fiction story point of view. In the novel of Divergent, there are many of idioms found at word to phrase level. From the data finding, this study scope to analyze pure idioms. The reason of limiting the data to Pure idioms is because many of idioms presented in the novel, but the Pure idioms is considered to be more complex unit to translate.

It is shown in the following example: If it is translated literally into roda ketiga in Bahasa Indonesia, the meaning would be misleading to the reader. Which is the dominant translation strategy applied by the translator in translating pure idioms in the novel? There are 38 pure idioms found in the novel Divergent by Veronica Roth. Pure idioms are chosen as the subject to this research because of its non literal meaning, and there should be a special treatment in its translation process.

This study focuses on the translation strategies used by the translator to solve the problem in translating pure idioms, and presents the dominant strategies applied in translating the pure idioms. To know which is the dominant translation strategy applied by the translator in translating pure idioms in the novel. Theoretical Significance a. The findings of the study are expected to give some positive contributions to the study of translation, especially in translating Pure Idioms into Bahasa Indonesia.

This study is expected to be a useful reference for the student of English Department, especially those who have interest in the field of translation. Practical Significance The study is expected to give a better comprehension to the reader and the researcher himself in the process of translating Pure Idioms.

Chapter I is Introduction. It consists of background of the study, statement of problem, scope of the study, objective of the study, significance of the study, and thesis organization. It is consisting of review of previous study, translation types of translation, translation process, translation equivalence , idioms Idiom characteristic, types of idioms, Idioms in Bahasa Indonesia , translation strategies of idiom, and the divergent novel.

The chapter deals with research design, unit of analysis, source of data, method of data collection, and method of data analysis.

Chapter IV is Data Analysis. It discusses about the translation strategies of every pure idiom in the novel.

Chapter V is Conclusion and Suggestion. This chapter includes the conclusion about analysis and suggestion dealing with the topic of the research. The works of those studies should be considered to conduct a new study with similar issue. The works of study may be supporting or not supporting to the new study.

Therefore a literature review is needed to be done before a new study is composed, this also prevents the plagiarism that might be done by the next researchers. In this research section, the literature review is divided into: There are two theses being the reference to this study. This thesis being the reference of this study, because of its similar unit of analysis. On his thesis he used a novel as the source of his research analysis, and focused on the translation strategies applied to translate pure idioms found in the Novel and its figurative meaning equivalent.

He used the theory of Idiom classification by Fernando to classify the idioms data in the novel and then scoping the unit analysis on the pure idioms. Translation To know how the process and the final works of a translation, first we need to comprehend what exactly Translation means. In the definition stated by Cartford They state that translating consists in the reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language message, firstly in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style.

The keywords are replacement, reproducing a meaning and equivalent in the TL. Newmark Newmark uses the word rendering instead of reproducing and replacement, but he also states that the translated text should be in the same way that the author intended the text.

Ikuti Di Facebook

The same way of what the author intended the text is having the similar meaning to the equivalent meaning. Form-based translation attempts to follow the form of SL Source Language and is known as literal translation, while meaning-based translation makes every effort to communicate the meaning of the SL Source Language text in the natural forms of the receptor language.

Based on the purpose of translation, Brislin in Choliludin, Pragmatic Translation It refers to the translation of a message with an interest in accuracy of the information that was meant to be conveyed in the source language form. It is not concerned with other aspects of the original language version. Aesthetic-poetic Translation This refers to translation in which the translator takes into account the affect, emotion, and feelings of an original agnate version, the aesthetic form used by the original author, as well as any information in the message.

The examples of this type are the translation of sonnet, rhyme, heroic couplet, dramatic dialogue, and novel. Ethnographic Translation The purpose of ethnographic translation is to explicate the cultural context of the source language and target language versions.

Translators have to be sensitive to the way the words are used and must know how the words fit into cultures. Linguistic Translation This is concerned with equivalent meanings of the constituent morphemes of the source language and grammatical form.

The example is the language in a computer program and machine translation. He state that translation is concerned with how lexicon, grammatical structure, cultural context and the communicative situation in a text are analyzed in the SL so that its meaning could be determined.

The discovered meaning of the SL is re- expressed and reconstructed into an appropriate lexicon, and grammatical structure accepted in the TL. The Translation process stated by Larson is presented on the diagram below.

Divergent Book Free PDF Download & Reviews

Translation process scheme By Larson Source: Larson The first stage is Analysis. At this stage the analysis is focused on the grammatical relationship, then the meaning of words and its words composition. At the second stage, the translator is about transferring the analyzed meaning from the first stage into the TL. The third stage is restructuring, at this stage the translator is restructuring to what the transferred meaning from the second stage into order and get the meaning fully accepted.

Figure 2. Nida and Taber This gives us a big picture on how the role of Equivalence in translation study is stated by Linguistic Expert. Equivalence is interrelated to translation study field. From the point of view in translation study, we have experts who try to define what equivalence in translation is. According to Cartford It can be concluded that Equivalence in translation is not about the sameness of meaning only, because the sameness of meaning could not easily be created between two different Languages.

The meaning equivalent should also cover the situational meaning and the implicit meaning of a text. In a simple word the equivalence in translation is the use of diction with the same meaning conveyed by a different expression. According to Nida Formal Equivalence Formal Equivalence is an Approach to translation which tries to remain as close to the original text as possible.

This is therefore much more of a word— for — word view of translation. Dynamic equivalence involves taking each sentence or thought from the original text and rendering it into a sentence in the target language that conveys the same meaning, but does not necessarily use the exact phrasing the original 2.

To define what idiom is, the Linguistic expert has composed their definition about Idiom. There are a lot of definitions stated by Linguistic expert which is in some way similar. Here some of the Linguistic expert that stated the definition about the Idiom that may help us to know the definition of Idioms clearly. The concatenation as such then constituencies a lexeme in its own right and should be entered as such in the lexicon.

Another Linguist that states idiom definition is Hornby According to Carter A large number of an idioms contain a verb and a noun, but although the verb may be placed in the past tense, the number of the noun can never be changed, for instance, the expressions kick the bucket and kicked the bucket someone who dies are largely used in English, in contrast to kick the buckets which never occurs. Ball He states that the use of familiar words in an unfamiliar sense. It can be concluded that an Idiom is an expression in a form of phrase, terms or sentence that has a special combination on the arrangement of its constituent, has a figurative meaning from its constituent, culturally bound, and semantically function as a single word.

According to Mona Baker, Idiom allows no variation under normal circumstances. Baker Addition By adding any word to an idiomatic expression, it would affect on the alter of its meaning, and remove its idiomatic senses.

For example: By deleting any word of an idiomatic expression would made the meaning and its idiomatic senses removed. Hence, have a tooth and spill beans have no idiomatic sense. Idioms accept no replacement of words even if those words are synonyms. For example, the long and short of it means the basic facts of a situation.

The adjective long cannot be substituted by another adjective, like tall, despite they have nearly the same meaning.

Changing the words order: For instance, the order of the words in the expression the long and the short of it cannot be changed into the short and the long of it.

Changing the grammatical structure: The passive form some beans were spilled has different meaning from its active form they spilled the beans meaning they reveal a secret. Linguistic expert has classified the types of idioms into their proposed categorization. Here is some of the linguist expert categorization: According to Lim Idioms with adjectives as keywords, as in cold comfort, wishful thinking, plan sailing.

Idiomatic pairs, as in safe and sound, aches and pains, sink or swim. Phrasal Verbs A Phrasal verb is a verb that contains of two kinds of word. The first word is a verb, and the second is word is particle. Tournures An idiom is the largest lexemic idioms, usually containing at least three words and mostly is verbs.

A tournures idiom usually falls into sentences. Based on its structure, tournures idioms are divided into: The form contains the compulsory of defines and indefinites article. The form contains an irreversible binomial introduced by a preposition. A direct object and a further possible modifier follow the primary verb. The leading verb is not followed by direct object but preposition plus noun or nothing. The leading verb is BE. Irreversible binomials Irreversible binomials consist of two words which are separated by conjunction, and the word order is fixed.

Phrasal Compound It is containing primarily nominal made up of adjective plus noun, noun plus noun, verb plus noun, or adverb plus preposition.

Incorporating verbs The incorporating verbs are in the form of: Noun-Verb Example: Sight-see means visiting famous places b. Adjective-Noun Example: Blackmail means a mail with an unknown sender c. Noun-Noun Example: Bootleg means made and sold illegally d.

Adjective-verb Example: Make a cranberry face it means that the face is turning red. As brown as berry, as clever as a basket full of monkeys 8. Institutionalized culturally pragmatic meaning proverbs Proverbs are of sentence length and have both an acceptable literal meaning and an additional moral or message.

Pure Idioms.

Veronica Roth

Pure idioms are always non literal, however they may be either invariable or may have little variation. In addition, idioms are said to be opaque. For example, pure idiom to spill the beans has nothing to do with the beans. Semi-idioms are said to have one or more literal constituents and one with non literal sub sense. Therefore, this type of idioms is considered partially opaque.

Literal idioms. This sub-class of idioms are either invariable or allow little variation. In addition, literal idioms are considered to be transparent as they can be interpreted on the basis of their parts. For example, of course, in any case, for certain. English has more types of idiom than Bahasa Indonesia. In this study, the researcher provides the classification based on an expert. Khak Struktur dan Makna1, states that types of idiom which listed in Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia KBBI are classified into 3 classification according to idiom structure and form, they are: Affixation The complex idiom can be formed by adding prefixes and also adding affixes in Bahasa Indonesia noun.

It changes the meaning of the noun which is formerly mean as tails into following the others idea instead of having his or her own. It changes the meaning of the verb which is formerly means as slipped into to be cling or attached to something 2. It changes the meaning of the noun which is formerly means as face into to be in a situation of facing each other. Reduplication In Bahasa Indonesia an idioms also formed by doing a reduplication.

The idioms Mata-Mata is a reduplication of a noun Mata. Verba Idiom 1. The verb of process Example: The idiom naik darah has meaning becoming furious. The verb of condition Example: The idiom gigit jari in Bahasa Indonesia has meaning as a feeling of anger, or disappointed B.

The first is about specification and the second for generalization. The idioms buaya darat means someone who has a bad attitude this refers to the specification The idioms darah daging means someone who is siblinghood in blood, this refers to the generalization 2. It is similar to what Makkai state as Proverb. Literally the idioms means Like a horse which out of its cage. Mona Baker composed strategies to translate idioms. There are four translation strategies that may used to translate idioms, they are: Translation by paraphrase TBP This is by far the most common way of translating idioms when an equivalent cannot be found in the target language or when it seems in appropriate to use idiomatic language in the target text because of differences in stylistic preferences of the source and target language 4.

Translation by omission TBO As with single words, an idiom may sometimes be omitted altogether in the target text. It is because it has no close equivalent in the target language, its meaning cannot be easily paraphrased, or for stylistic reasons 2. It is a literary works which are constructed in a similar unit composition to short stories. They contain a plot with characters; they have settings, theme s , and point s of view.

According to Sumardjo From the definition stated by Sumardjo, novel is considered as a unique literary works that artistically formed. A novel is presented in the form of printed book and also in an electronic book e-book nowadays. The story presented in the novel is usually a fictional story, although there are some novels which present a story based on a real life story. This kind of literary work is being such an amusement to the reader, because it may bring the reader imagination through the presented story.

Novel is also being an interesting unit in the field of translation.

A literary translation is the field where the translator, try to translate literary work into another language. However the translation process of literary work may find problems. The language unit usually used by the writer in writing a novel is idioms. This is also found in the novel of Divergent by Veronica Roth which is the source of data for this study. This novel is a trilogy novel, the first book is entitled Divergent, the second is entitled Insurgent, and the third is entitled Allegiant.

Of course, the book makes these deaths a big deal but you're sitting there like Back in at the Department of Genetic Welfare, Caleb is picked for the suicide mission of breaking into the top-security vault to steal the memory-wiping serum.

This is only fitting as Caleb is literally the only character who needs to be redeemed for his betrayal in Insurgent. I mean, the tagline of the book is "one choice can define you" so if Caleb doesn't own up to this moment he's basically going to be a selfish, heartless, coward for the rest of the story.

Oh wait. This book hasn't sufficiently fucked up already so instead of using a perfectly good opportunity for a back-stabbing character to redeem themselves, it's just going to unnecessarily sacrifice the freaking main character because life is cruel and heartless goddammit! I could literally write another essay on why this particular ending sucked balls, but before some anon messages me saying "omgg it's veronica's book and her ending was so tragic but so byootiful don't you know you're not allowed to hate it??!

This is literally all I ask of any author of any novel. From just a character perspective, it makes sense that Tris would sacrifice herself for the greater good.

That's just what she, as a selflessly reckless person, would do. We already know that Tris is a character who's willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good. Did we learn any new information about her character when she decided to make this sacrifice?

Wouldn't we have gained a better perspective of Caleb if he had made this choice instead? And most importantly, wouldn't sparing Tris's life allow the final conclusion of this trilogy to be more sound, less rushed, and less overshadowed by the her death? Tris's sacrifice comes off as being meaningless because she doesn't save anyone from dying.

Had she failed to using the memory serum, the worst thing that would have happened was that Chicago would have been reset and the main conflict would have disappeared completely. And that doesn't even matter in the end because all the major characters that we are supposed to care about were already inoculated against the memory serum anyway.

In fact, by stealing the memory serum, Tris effectively tosses up the fate of Chicago in the air. The careless way her death is written and revealed makes the ending look like it was purely written simply for a cheap shock value. Cue the forced emotional and dramatic ending where readers drown in a puddle of their feels as we're forced to read Four's tragic reaction to her death.

The last few chapters, including the epilogue, are incredibly rushed. Literally every single issue in the growing mountain of problems that accumulated over the course of this book are immediately solved without any further complications or commentary because deus ex machina. Keeping her intentions in mind, I still think this ending failed in it's execution.

Primarily, the inorganic way that the events are revealed crushes the effect this ending was trying to achieve.

Then later on, it is revealed that the Bureau supplied Jeanine with the attack simulation serum she used to massacre the Abnegation. The movie based on the book is directed by Robert Schwentke. The Aptitude test was set to default which means every child are in the same simulation. This This Update shows shows whether these these forecasts were were met, explaining divergence between forecasts and the actual outturn, and firmss the forecast firm forecastss for the next Much A do about Something: Ethnographic Translation The purpose of ethnographic translation is to explicate the cultural context of the source language and target language versions.

It changes the meaning of the noun which is formerly means as face into to be in a situation of facing each other. I think of something to say, but it is too intimate, so I swallow it. Of course, the book makes these deaths a big deal but you're sitting there like Back in at the Department of Genetic Welfare, Caleb is picked for the suicide mission of breaking into the top-security vault to steal the memory-wiping serum.
